The BD Multiomics Alliance – An introduction

 

The BD Multiomics Alliance, initiated in 2019, has brought together a group of seven leading academic researchers from all over Europe. The Alliance has been driven by the common belief that the simultaneous evaluation of protein and mRNA expression at the single-cell level would lead to a greater, more comprehensive understanding of processes underlying disease. The researchers have since used the BD Rhapsody™ Single-Cell Analysis System and the BD AbSeq® technology in three areas of research. These are haemato-oncology & stem cells (human), Treg and CD8 T cell plasticity & function (mice) and the sepsis immune-profiling (human).

 

Members of the Alliance

 

At the kick-off meeting of the Multiomics Alliance, two of the seven Alliance members shared their vision and expectations. Now, 2 years later, four of them have taken part in a short mini-series, sharing their experience and first results. The four researchers participating in the mini-series and their areas of activity are:

 

  • Prof. Orla Sheils, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland – Her focus is on translational research, asking questions about clinical utility and disease processes. In the Alliance, Prof. Shelis works in the area of sepsis immune-profiling.
  • Dr. Andrew Filby, Newcastle University, UK – His focus is on methodology innovation and its applications. In the Alliance, Dr. Filby works in the area of sepsis immune-profiling.
  • Prof. Susan Schlenner, KU Leuven, Belgium – Her focus is on Tregs, which are immunosuppressive T cells that are responsible for the prevention of autoimmune diseases by regulating the activity of the immune system. In the Alliance, Prof. Schlenner works in the areas of Tregs and CD8 T cell plasticity and function.
  • Dr. Bruno Pavia and his Ph.D. student Catia Simoes, University of Navarra, Spain –  Their focus is on finding novel antigens or proteins that are expressed by normal versus leukemic stem cells. In the Alliance, Dr. Pavia works in the area of haemato-oncology and stem cells.
