NK Cells

Natural killer (NK) cells are generally categorized as innate immune cells, though they are morphologically similar to lymphocytes and express lymphoid markers. NK cells are Group 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and exert cytotoxic functions similar to CD8+ T cells, mounting a frontline defense against pathogens and tumors. Unlike their T cell counterparts, NK cells do not require specific antigen recognition or costimulation.
