Stem Cell Research
Workflow
To collect the exact cells of interest from millions of other cells in a sample is essential to stem cell research efforts. Among the several available methods for cell isolation, flow cytometry can offer high purity and yield, making it an ideal tool for studying rare cell populations.
Solutions from BD Biosciences
To help researchers isolate rare stem cells, BD Biosciences offers two advanced cell sorting platforms and closely optimized reagents.
The BD FACSAria™ II system uses fixed-alignment technology to make high-speed, multicolor cell sorting more accessible. A patented gel coupled cuvette flow cell design minimizes startup-to-sort time, improves reproducibilty, offers high sensitivity and resolution, and is easy to configure for a wide range of applications.
Software enhancements include BD Cytometer Setup and Tracking software, which automates setup and establishes a baseline to improve consistency of results.
The BD Influx™ sorter features a modular architecture, a powerful combination of detection abilities, and hands-on controls to make the system highly adaptable to site and application needs. The platform also uses replaceable, gamma-irradiated fluidics kits to reduce the risk of cross-contamination of the cell product from previous sorts, and an optional HEPA-filter enclosure to help protect the cell product and operator.

Reagents
BD Biosciences large collection of pre-conjugated antibodies to stem cell surface markers is optimized to work with BD Biosciences flow cytometry instruments. BD Biosciences also offers BD Stemflow™ kits to streamline cell sorting for researchers new to or experienced with flow cytometry. The ready-to-use kits integrate antibodies, compensation beads, protocols, and analysis tools to maximize reproducibility and improve productivity. An open design allows for the easy addition of supplementary antibodies to adapt the kit to meet specific research objectives. Additionally, BD IMag™ cell separation products can be used to deplete cells from samples in preparation for flow cytometry sorting.
To support cell therapy researchers, BD provides special order cell processing reagents that are derived from BD research clones to support the transition from research to trial candidates. This custom antibody service develops products using special manufacturing processes and testing related to antibody clone development and characterization.
